Synchronizing audiences

This feature is available for the Automation and eCommerce products

In an external system, such as a DMP, CDP or CRM, you usually have much more data than in your Spotler account. On the one hand, this is because these systems already contain a lot of data on their own, but on the other hand, because they are often also the central system that retrieves even more data from other integrated systems. Think of ecommerce platforms, cash register systems, ticketing systems, ERP, etc. That is why you can generally make more extensive segmentations in your external system. We call this audiences.

It is not necessary to synchronize all this data to Spotler in order to be able to communicate relevantly as a marketer. These external audiences are easy to use in Spotler via the API, without having to synchronize all the data itself. In addition, it is an advantage that as a marketer you do not have to perform any extra actions to synchronize existing audiences with Spotler. For example, think of “your Top 100 customers based on turnover in the past 6 months” or “all people who have visited your website in the past month”. With the API, the marketer now has all relevant audiences available in Spotler for email marketing purposes.

Possibilities of the API

There are several possibilities via the API regarding audiences. This way your audiences always stay up-to-date in Spotler:

Requirements:

  • The audience name must be unique
  • The audience id must be unique

View the technical documentation for all possibilities and methods of the Spotler API. Each method is provided with a short explanation and an opportunity to try it out.

Synchronize an audience

Synchronizing an audience must be based on a unique name and a unique audience id.

Changing and deleting an audience

Delete an audience

What if I can't delete my audience?

When your audience is used as a target group of a scheduled mailing, it is not possible to delete the audience. Then first delete the scheduled mailing in the Mailings module.

This is also the case if you have set up an automailer in the Mailings module for a mailing with this audience as target group. With an automailer, a mailing is automatically sent after a set period to all contacts who have been added to the audience after the first sending moment of the mailing. Only after the sending moment of the automailer you can remove the audience again.

It is also possible that an audience is set as a filter on a trigger or step in a campaign or automation. Then first remove the filter in the Campaigns module or in the Automations module.

Add and remove contacts

Add another contact to your audience, because this person also needs to receive a mailing? Or do you want to remove a contact that is absolutely not allowed to receive the mailing? With the API you can easily add or remove contacts from your audience. If you want to empty an audience in one go, use the delete contacts method without specifying which contacts should be deleted.

Audiences in Spotler

You can see your audiences in three places:

  1. In the Dynamic Lists overview.
  2. In Step 2-Target group of the step-by-step plan in the Mailings module. Here you can select an audience for sending your mailing.
  3. In the editor of the Messages module. When you use a dynamic content block, it is possible to select an audience.
  4. In the Campaigns module it is possible to apply filtering to a trigger or step based on Audiences.

Overview of dynamic lists

In the overview of dynamic lists you can recognize an audience by the database icon behind the name:

Via the drop-down menu you can export an audience as a .CSV file, see which contacts are in the audience and you can move an audience to a folder.

View

When you double click on the audience or click on View in the drop-down menu, a screen opens with an overview of contacts that are in the audience. On the left side of the screen you see the properties of the audience. For example, you can see when there has been a sync.

Step 2 - Select target group mailing

Sending a mailing to an audience works the same way as sending a mailing to any other dynamic list. In step 2 of the step-by-step plan to send a mailing, choose the dynamic list option. Then select the desired audience.

When you work with permissions in Spotler, you have to make a choice with which permission you want to mail. The permissions in Spotler are leading in this case, so that the registration and logout process works properly.

Dynamic content block

It is also possible to select an audience for a dynamic content block. This works in the same way as with a dynamic list.

Filter to an automation trigger or step

It is possible to apply filtering to a trigger or step based on Audiences. This works in the same way as when you use a dynamic list from Spotler as filtering. The triggers or steps will then only be executed for contacts that are in the audience.
